Arkansas Heritage SITES We are pleased to announce that funding for next year is approved for Arkansas Heritage SITES operated through Arkansas State University. In addition to HPMEC, other sites include the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza and Lakeport Plantation in Lake Village. We are greatly indebted State Sen. Robert Thompson of Paragould who led the funding effort in the Senate, with support from Sen. Paul Bookout, and to Representatives Mike Patterson, Joan Cash, Ray Kidd, Butch Wilkins, Charolette Wagner, Robert Moore, and Tommy Lee Baker for their leadership in the House. “In the current economic environment, this amount of funding would have been very doubtful without such strong support,” Thompson said. The lawmakers succeeded in getting more than $1.3 million in funding to operate the sites, including a start on permanent funding. Until this session, all funding has been temporary through the General Improvement Fund. We want to thank everyone for contacts in support of funding for ASU’s Heritage Sites. The voice of the people was an important component in the successful funding effort. |

Barnes & Noble Bookfair Report The HPMEC Barnes & Noble Bookfair, March 6, 7, & 8, earned $366.61 for the museum. Net sales for the weekend were $2,444, just over the $2,000 requirement to receive 15% cash back. An additional $45 was received from donors who could not participate in the Bookfair. In addition to the cash contribution, the museum received valuable publicity through HPMEC exhibits during the weekend in the Mall at Turtle Creek, Jonesboro. Thank you to all who contributed to the success of this event. |

Book Launching Party The Book Launching Party for Pfeiffer Country by Sherry Laymon was a great success. Sherry signed her book in the Hemingway Barn Studio, 4-6 p.m., Thursday, May 7. Pfeiffer Country, is the compelling history of how Paul Pfeiffer’s tenant farming model contrasted with operations throughout the Mississippi Delta. Pfeiffer built two-story homes for his tenants and provided barns and other farm buildings for his farmers. He allowed them to have farm animals and land to grow food for their families and livestock. His generosity to his tenants is the key to the success of his farm systems. Pfeiffer bought his first property in Clay county in 1902 and eventually owned 63,000 acres. |

January 27 Ice Storm Most of the January 27 ice storm damage was to trees and landscaping. Fortunately, we had no major damage to structures, and most of the clean-up, tree trimming and repairs are complete. The grounds look better each day as trees and flowers fill out. |

Educational Programming Award The Arkansas Museum Association 2008 Educational Program of the Year Award, Honorable Mention, was presented to HPMEC in recognition of its Adult Education Program, Hemingway-Pfeiffer Creative Writers’ Retreats. The award was presented to Deanna Dismukes, HPMEC Education Coordinator, at the AMA annual conference awards banquet in Little Rock, April 2, 2009. “This award would not have been possible without Dr. Rob Lamm, ASU; Roland Mann, Oxford, MS; and Donna James, Imboden, AR, who have worked with and encouraged the writers who come to the Educational Center to pursue their individual literary interests. Two of the Retreat writers have published books during the time they have been attending the Retreats which began in 2002,” Dismukes said. The award gave state-wide recognition to HPMEC and adult educational programming at the site. Congratulations, Deanna! |

Hawkins Appointed to Arkansas History Commission Governor Mike Beebe recently announced his appointment of Dr. Ruth Hawkins, Director, ASU Heritage SITES (HPMEC, Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza, and Lakeport Plantation in Lake Village), to the Arkansas History Commission. Dr. Hawkins’ appointment expires January 14, 2016; she replaces Harold Trumon. One of the oldest existing state agencies, the Arkansas History Commission was created by the General Assembly in 1905. Inspired and guided during its early years by John Hugh Reynolds, the Commission is the official archives of the state, responsible for collecting and preserving the source materials of the history of Arkansas. The agency continues the tradition of organizing and maintaining the state and local history of Arkansas by collecting manuscript materials, census records, military records, family histories, and various county, state and federal records. The history of Arkansas can be researched through manuscripts, books, microfilm, newspapers, maps, and photographs. The History Commission is composed of seven members appointed by the Governor with the approval of the State Senate. Members serve seven-year terms staggered so that one expires each January. Members may be appointed for additional terms. |

Sherry Laymon was born in Star City, moved to Heber Springs as a teenager and has lived in Arkansas all her life. She received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. She earned her doctorate degree in Heritage Studies from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Dr. Laymon wrote her doctoral dissertation on this topic and was encouraged to convert it into a book because Pfeiffer’s farming model contrasted significantly from the prominent sharecropping and tenant farming operations in the South. Laymon has taught math and social studies classes in Arkansas schools and colleges for seventeen years and currently lives in Hot Springs. We were honored to host the book signing as a tribute to Mr. Paul M. Pfeiffer and his valuable contributions to farming in Clay County. We are grateful to Laymon for making her research available through her book. Pfeiffer Country in both soft cover and hardbound editions can be purchased at the Museum Store. Call the Museum Store for shipping information. |
