Shirley Wright Schoettlin

Shirley Wright Schoettlin is greatly missed.  Shirley died December 30, 2008 from complications of pancreatic cancer at the home of her son in Kansas City.  Shirley spent nearly 30 years in the real estate industry in Kansas City and Washington D.C. before retiring to Piggott in 1998.  She organized HPMEC docents for the July 1999 Grand Opening Celebration and continued to serve as a docent.  The Shirley Wright Schoettlin Collection at HPMEC includes her numerous donations of 1930s ladies clothing and accessories.  She received the Arkansas Delta Byways 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year Award for her work developing the Downtown Inn, an award winning bed and breakfast in Piggott.  She was twice appointed by Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee to serve as a member of the Commission on National and Community Service.

HPMEC and the Piggott community will greatly miss our faithful, generous friend, Shirley Wright Schoettlin.

     Pfeiffer Dollars Program

HPMEC visitors have spent 312 Pfeiffer Dollars with Piggott merchants since the program started October 1, 2008.  After the October promotion, merchants agreed to continue the program through December 31and have decided to continue  the program in this new year. The Pfeiffer Dollars program idea comes  from the story that, during the Great Depression, Paul M. Pfeiffer assisted the community by providing coupons that had to be spent exclusively in Piggott.

The Pfeiffer Dollars program serves to increase visitors’ dollars spent in Piggott businesses in one of two ways.  Visitors to the museum receive one Pfeiffer Dollar for each dollar of paid admission.  They can apply one Pfeiffer Dollar toward each $10 worth of purchases from participating businesses.  Visitors who shop before visiting the museum can show receipts from participating Piggott merchants and receive $1off their admission for each $10 worth of purchases.

A Pfeiffer Dollar window decal identifies the participating merchants.

Arkansas Heritage SITES Need Your Help

Arkansas Heritage SITES operated through Arkansas State University need your help!  Unless funding can be obtained through the upcoming legislative session, HPMEC, the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza, and Lakeport Plantation in Lake Village will have no operating budget after June 30, 2009.

Over several legislative sessions, the university has attempted to secure permanent funding for these sites and has received “temporary fixes” in the form of special appropriations.  Given today’s economic climate, however, it will be an uphill battle in the legislature to get funding extended beyond the current fiscal year.

Please write, call, or email Arkansas legislators and Governor Beebe to let them know you support the programs provided by these museums.  They need to know why it is important to the state, not just to the counties in which they are located.   For example, these sites serve as laboratories for ASU’s Heritage Studies Ph.D. program, provide state-mandated professional development workshops for teachers, supplement the state curriculum frameworks through programming for elementary and secondary students, and provide special tours, educational events, presentations and workshops on a regular basis.  In addition, there are tours for drop-in visitors from throughout the country.

You may go to www.Arkansas.gov/house/reps.php  or www.Arkansas.gov/senate/senators.php to link to the email of your legislators.  Put in the subject line:  “Arkansas Heritage SITES at Arkansas State University.”  Contact the Governor at: http://governor.arkansas.gov/contact/index.php and click on “Arts, Museums, History,” then “State Museums.”  Governor Mike Beebe’s office address is State Capitol 250 , Little Rock, AR  72201.  The legislative session opened last week, and your support is needed early in the session.   If possible, please send a copy of your letter or email to Dr. Ruth Hawkins, Director of Arkansas Heritage SITES at ASU, rhawkins@astate.edu.  for a support-file on behalf of these museums. Thank you for your help!

Preservation Award

The National Trust for Historic Preservation presented the National Preservation Honor Award to ASU’s Arkansas Heritage SITES (System Initiatives for Teaching and Economic Support) program at its annual conference in Tulsa, October 2008.

Since its inception in 1999, Arkansas Heritage SITES at ASU has restored three iconic structures– the HPMEC, the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza, and Lakeport Plantation in Lake Village.  The sites are transformed into heritage tourism attractions to interpret a full century of  heritage from the plantation economy of the 1830s to the tenant farmers’ movement in the 1930s.

The SITES program has also established two National Scenic Byways, the Crowley’s Ridge Parkway and Arkansas’ Great River Road, which span a 15-county region in eastern Arkansas.

A key component of the program is ASU’s heritage studies interdisciplinary program, which offers one of the few doctorates of philosophy that includes historic preservation.  The doctoral program uses Arkansas  Heritage SITES as a hands-on learning laboratory to train future preservation leaders.

“ASU’s Heritage SITES program is  making the case for what preservation can do to revitalize communities,” said  Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by preservation leaders from throughout the nation,” commented  Dr. Ruth Hawkins, director of the program.  “It gives further validity to our projects and is a wonderful testament to the commitment of a lot of people, both within the university and throughout the state, who recognize the importance of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Arkansas Delta.”
